Playing Catch Up!!!

Phew! I made it through the weekend and have a busy week ahead. Just hoping to catch up on some projects in my sewing room!!!

It was a busy time leading up to the weekend... .baking, cleaning (my house has never looked so good!!!), renting out an apartment (yeah! now we are back to full occupancy!), dealing with a kid with high blood sugar (she came home from school Friday morning and by the afternoon, she was back to normal levels and back to her usual sloppy, crazy self!), attending a school meeting for the said sloppy crazy gal (she has a 504 plan), more cleaning, a little more shopping and I even made it to the gym!!!

The baby shower that my SIL (dh's sister) and I hosted at my house for our SIL (BIL's wife) went really well! Our SIL's family came from Arizona, Michigan, Rochester NY, and Ohio!!! It was great to meet them all!!!

The guests and gifts as they are beginning to arrive..

This bassinett has been in my MIL's family since the early 1940's. Her younger sister was the first to sleep in this bassinett and many babies have slept in it since, including my 3 babies!

Including the shopping cart cover that I made for the baby-to-be, we had a few more little items to shower upon my SIL ....
a baby calendar! This is a great item to give as a gift. Someone gave one to me at my baby shower and I hung it by the change table where I could jot down new milestones and notes (much more easily than filling up the neglected baby books). I used them with all three babies for a couple of years, at least.

This was a regifted gift. My BIL (dad-to-be) gave this hat to my son when Messy Marvin made a trip to NYC to visit his uncle. After the Mets game, I am not sure how many times Marvin wore this hat, as he is a Yankees fan! and now, his head has grown too big!!!! So he has given it to his cousin-t0-be.
I also put together a cloth book from a really cute panel that I bought at the Traditions at White Swan booth at the Lancaster Quilt Show. I love their stuff and am always sure to visit them a few times while at the show.

I decided on lime green (of course!) and turquoise for our shower colors but these lilies were beautiful....
(and smelled great!!!!)
in a turquoise vase (sorry the vase is not photographed).

Here is the cake that I slaved over night and day.....
ha!!!! yeah right!!! I bought this beauty at a local grocery store.
Marble cake with better cream frosting... mmmm!!!

Several of the menfolk, along with Messy Marvin (aka Nature Boy), took a hike while the ladies and children ooohed and aaahed, ate and chatted the afternoon away. Apparently, lots of nature was seen including a salamander, a frog.....

Since many of the guests had traveled very far, the parents-to-be also hosted a picnic at a local park yesterday.

I had a couple of requests for the recipe for the chocolate chip shortbread squares that I mentioned in my last post....

it is a recipe that I got from my mother who got it many years ago from a medical resident on her 'team' at the family medicine centre (written how the Canadians would write it!) where she worked.

Chocolate Chip Shortbread Squares
1/2 lb butter (no substitutions)... I didn't say they were void of calories!
2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 small pkg of chocolate chips (6 oz)
Cream butter. Add salt and sugar. Add flour. Knead in 9"x9" greased pan (but I am pretty sure I didn't grease it and had not trouble or maybe I did... it is all a blur). Work in chocolate chips. Pat into the pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-50 minutes.
Easy Peasy!!!

In spite of the craziness of the past few days,

I finished the little quiltie for Lisa for the 6"-12" mini quilt trading swap. Pictured here is the back of the quiltie. Tomorrow, I will show you the front!!! I have never sewn with linen before. I quite enjoyed the texture!

Well, while we have a temporary lull in the storm, I am expecting some out-of-town guests tomorrow for a night or two, followed by a field trip, a quick visit from my parents who are on their way to Boston, and the last of the end-of-the-year festivities at school (which officially is over on Tuesday, June 24th).

Now if I can only keep the house clean........

  1. Woo hoo! You made it through the weekend. Everything looks wonderful. I'll take the piece with the big butter cream flower on it please :) Your summer is really starting with a bang! And hey, no worries with the quilt, do what you need to do first. No need to stress about that, any time is fine! Have a great time with all your company and parents. You could even send the quilt to Boston with them and I could meet them for tea. :D Hope your weather is better than ours! Love Stacy

  2. that is so nice about the family bassinet. my step-dad offered me the crib he and his sibs and nephews and nieces slept in, but i think it's in calif. now and likely not up to safety code as far as slat distances go. so wanted my babe to sleep in it,... but oh, well...
